I've recently discovered that it's really hard for me to get a job. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of skills that include sitting and standing without getting winded. I mean, that's just incredibly hard to find.
But seriously, it's really hard for me to get a job. Part of the issue is that I hate applying for jobs. Writing cover letters is a daunting task that up until recently I didn't know were sort of expected for all jobs. What's even more annoying is going through all of that and not getting a reply, not even an email letting me know, "Hey, you're cool and all, but uh, we don't want you. Try McDonald's"
These complaints probably sound childish and absurd, but I'm sick of playing the employment game. If I have a good set of skills that could be useful to an employer, why can't I get hired? What is the problem? It would be awesome if it were like getting a paper back from a professor with all of the things you've done wrong written out. Send me a little note on the side letting me know exactly why I wasn't hired. Am I overqualified? Unqualified? Did you not like semi-creepy coffee mug I got you just as a thank you for considering me? It was a really nice mug!
Back in my younger days, I only applied for fun jobs. I applied for jobs that had me editing videos all day or watching kids at a summer camp. Now, I have to get a job that has me doing dull work, and yet these jobs are what count as "experience." Gallery 37's center for the arts on the other hand isn't real "work." Well, I thought the goal was to find a career you really enjoy and to get jobs that lead you down that road. But I guess I was wrong.
Still, I envy people that get dull (but still competitive) jobs without much effort. Or, maybe they do put forth a lot of effort. Maybe I'm not applying for the right jobs. Maybe I just have a lot of learning to do. I think for the first time, I wish I could be a kid again. Back then I didn't waste my summer applying for random jobs I won't even get hired for.
No offense to those that work at McDonald's.
...are they hiring?
